Imbolc Family Art Workshop

Imbolc Sunday Family Art Workshop Room 2 Collis Sandes House 11-2pm

Lets celebrate the arrival of Spring together with Art and Craft making that weaves together the stories of Brigid and Imbolc.

Art activity one Brid Ogs

Brid ogs are hand crafted dolls that both adults and children will make together. The brid ogs carries on a tradition that goes back thousands of years. The Brid og would be left on boats and in houses as a symbol of protection for the year a head.

Using the Brid ogs we will set postive intentions about what we want to see grow through Spring.

Art Activity 2 Lino Printing of Animals like Hares, foxes and salmon.

Brigid had many friendships with Animals and you’ll hear many stories of brigids adventures with these animals.

Lino printing is a syle of printmaking where you will carve your own image onto a lino block and then print onto paper with rollers.

This is fine art practice and you and your family will learn how to do this practice at home also.

Storytelling Activity

Listen to the story of the Brat bride which is bridgets muliti coloured cloak.

As the Cailleach’s cloak brought Winter, Brigids brat brought Spring.

Brigid decided to make her home in Kildare. She wished to build a convent there and set out to find the perfect site. Eventually, she found a place that would be ideal for her new convent. However, the land belonged to the King of Leinster.

Brigid met the King of Leinster and a band of horsemen returning from a hunt, she approached the king and told him she needed land. He asked her how much she needed, and Brigid replied that all she asked for was the amount her cloak would cover.

Amused by this strange request, the King agreed, and she laid her cloak on the ground. To his amazement, the cloak grew and spread until it covered the rich, green acres we know today as The Curragh of Kildare. This area is also known as St. Brigid's Pastures.
